Calories are a buzz word for sure when it comes to weight loss!  Many people use calorie “calculators” online to determine calories for weight loss which also track their calories. Some calculations may end up being much too low or high because most calculators don’t determine your metabolic rate, the intensity of your exercise or your lean mass.  So be choosey when selecting your calculator! I’ve had 250 pounds men tell me they figured their calories to be 1200/day. That is not enough and that person will find it extremely difficult to stay on that. So are calories important?

Calories do have a role in maintaining or losing weight;  you can still overeat on healthy foods so portions are important but more important is the quality of the calories we eat.  By focusing only on calories, you’re more likely to get choose foods that are artificially sweetened and loaded with preservatives in an attempt to “cut back.”

Start here:

Eat “clean” foods; avoid anything in a box or package
Eat more veggies and less grains
Eat lean meats such as poultry breast, fish and grass fed beef
Eat dark colored foods: beets, broccoli, kale, berries, spinach, peppers etc
Eat healthy fats: avocado, olive oil, nuts, salmon, coconut oil

One way to control portions is to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, 1/4 with lean protein and 1/4 with starches such as quinoa, sweet potatoes or brown rice.

It may sound difficult at first, but you’ll start to enjoy these foods, you’ll feel better and stay healthier.  Give it a try!  If you get stumped, don’t hesitate to call me and we’ll figure it out together.
